I wasn't more than two feet into the room when the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.

There was definitely something different about this suspect. There was a palpable power rippling through, more intense than my psychic energy.

Who was this guy anyway?

There was no other way to find out, but to touch him.

Psychic — check.

Bad ass chick with a sword — check.

Able to heal from deadly wounds in an instant — that's me.

But something is wrong.

Something my years as an interrogator for the Salem Preternatural Task Force or the witches, werewolves and vampires I take orders from, prepared me for.

Someone is trying to strip me of my powers, take permanent residence in my body, kill me one demon at a time.

But I won't let them, not without a fight.

My name is Maurin Kincaide — Psychometric, and this is my story.

The Morrigna Paranormal Mystery The Maurin Kincaide Series Book 1 eBook Rachel Rawlings

I downloaded The Morrigna as a free book from Amazon. Geez, where to start with this one? First, lets discuss the Morrigan-Morrigna switch. The author couldn't decide on which spelling to use (although, Morrigan is more recognized and understandable). The author switched back and forth between both spellings, which only emphasized the idea she misspelled her book title. Yikes!

The book also felt like it lacked a proper edit. Especially the min-to-mind conversations that lacked ANY quotations to emphasize speech-- there were not even any italics, which is becoming the industry's standard for telepathic communication. I had a very difficult time with this, slowing the reading experience to try and under stand what was speech and what was narration. There was also an area where the first person seemed to switch to someone else without notifying the reader. Awkward. The spelling was fine (barring the Morrigna thing), but spell-check is not editing. I struggled with this one until the 39-percent mark, after which, I gave up.

To address the characters-- there was a lot of potential, but it never really came together for me. Too bad, the plot was interesting--and the only reason I kept at this story beyond the first chapters.

The Morrigna Paranormal Mystery The Maurin Kincaide Series Book 1 eBook Rachel Rawlings Reviews

I enjoyed the book, except the inner dialog of the heroine (especially during the fighting) drove me nuts....one minute she's fighting for her life, then she has these innermost conversations going with herself....I'm like. O.o seriously? Ya have the very definition of (shell on earth) aimed at ya & your thinking about your childhood or lack of friendships....come on...first let me just say, I'm not a huge fan of long winded inner dialogs, I know many may find it interesting, but I just want to get to the freaking good stuff all ready! Thank you very much! I still plan to read the next book of course, I mean I seriously liked the book enough to find out what happens next. I just hope it gets better....more facts instead of all the dang guessing. I wish the heroine could have wielded that behemoth amount t of power she was gifted with more often & stopped whining about getting the short end of the stick all the time....shut up & grow a pair already! Ya have a goddess inside ya....embrace that powerful inner b!tch already!
Exactly! I agree with so many other reviews on this book.
Errors, errors and more errors throughout this book. I lost track of who was who, are they saying this out loud or thinking it to themselves, who were these characters that came into the picture..... I know, I know. There is a "thank you" to someone who had read and re-read the book and helped make constant edits but, I think this person may have been bias because there were still so many mistakes.
This has a good story line to it. It just needs a good writer (co-writer maybe?) to help take it where it should go to keep their readers interested and how to correctly introduce all these characters in order for the reader to remember (or know) who was who. I even forgot the main characters name when the story suddenly changed into those that went to the Witches Corner(?). I'm thinking, wait is the writer forgetting something here? I thought her name was Maurin. But, then these others were talking in the first persons which, was strange when it only started out as Maurin being the one telling the story.
And honestly? I really tried to stay focused and stay with the book because I really wanted to know what all was taking place and how it ends but I finally had to throw my hands up in the air and say I could not finish this book as it was written. Kept looking at the page numbers to see how close I was but I wasn't even half way through.
Sorry. Not a good read as written
The Morrigna is the first book in the Maurin Kincaide series by Rachel Rawlings. the Maurin Kincaide series is an adult urban fantasy series that reminded me of Desires of Demons by Debra Dunbar, in the fact that there were lots of paranormals coming together. I had some issues with the world building in this one, but once I got into the swing of the book it was a nice read. Nothing earth shattering, and it wasn’t my favorite book that I have ever read, but it was good. And hardcore fans of urban fantasy and paranormals should check out this series, because there are already 4 or 5 books out, so you can get your instant gratification fix.

The redeeming thing abut The Morrigna was the main character, Maurin Kincaide. I really enjoyed her, and if I do continue on with this series, it will be because of her. I also really enjoyed the romance aspect of this story. It wasn’t who I initially pegged that it would be with, which was a fun surprise for me. Although, as soon as we were introduced to the real love interest, it made perfect sense to me.

The hard part for me was that we were dumped into this world rather abrubtly, right in the middle of the characters day. It seemed like were were coming into the middle of this investigation without any real development of the who or the why. We were left to figure those things out on the fly. It felt like I was reading a second or third book in the series. I wanted a little more backstory up front. A little more on the lay of the land and who the big players were. But I stuck with it, and once I pushed past my initial confusion (and I was pretty confused for the first 1/3 of the story) the plot starts to gain some real momentum, which was nice. Once that happened, and I was able to get into the plot, I started enjoying the story more.

The Morrigna is packed with action and tons of paranormal creatures. Psychics, witches, demons, vampires and all the typical sorts are out to play, with a special interest in the witches. This was a good first book, but I still felt like the world was lacking up front.

Bottom line if you can’t get enough urban fantasy and paranormal romances, this is a series to add to your TBR list. You will be able to read the books back to back and they have a strong main character. If you are picky about your world building, this book gets off to a slow start on that front.

*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.
